Berry Lemonade Slush with Essential Oils

Delicious Easy 4 Ingredient Berry Lemonade Slush Made with Essential Oils. Healthy summer drink with less than ¼ the amount of sugar vs store bought beverages. www.paintedteacup.comA few weeks ago we had a wonderful guest post from Krista at My Naturally Crazy Life. She wrote about how to reduce your sugar intake by using essential oils in your water.

Her post inspired me to make a delicious summer drink for those hot days on the deck. Since I don’t drink, I wanted to have a yummy ‘cocktail-like’ drink that I could sip on that was not jammed packed with sugar and that was relatively healthy.

I should share that this is not my first attempt at making an essential oil themed summer drink. My husband and I recently tried to make both lemon and grapefruit iced tea using essential oils. It was an epic fail. I could smell the essential oils but the taste of the tea was too overpowering and you couldn’t taste the oils at all.

But I was determined to make a delicious drink. I looked in the freezer and saw the package of mixed berries and had a lightbulb moment. Why not use berries and lemon essential oil to make a delicious drink?

Thus, the Berry Lemonade Slush was born and it is delicious… if I do say so myself 🙂 As I said my intention was for this to be a non-alcoholic beverage. However for those who drink, try adding a splash of vodka to this slush, I think you will like it!

This recipe is so easy, only 4 ingredients are needed… well 5 if you count water and ice as two separate ingredients!

Berry Lemonade Slush Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of mixed berries (I used frozen)
  • 1 ½ cups of water
  • 1 tsp of sugar
  • 4-5 drops of lemon essential oil*
  • 6-8 ice cubes

*Please note that essential oils are not all made the same and that not all brands create oils that can be ingested. Some brands have synthetic fillers added making the oils unsafe for ingestion. Make sure you are using Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade essential oils. If the oil can be ingested, the bottle will say ‘for dietary use’ and you will also see ‘supplement facts’ on the bottle.

Making Your Yummy Drink:

  1. Place berries, water, and ice cubes in a blending machine. Personally I used our NutriBullet which I absolutely love for making all kinds of drinks (more on this in another post). Blend until there are no more ‘chunks’.
  2. Add the sugar and lemon essential oil (start with 3-4 drops of essential oil, if you would like a stronger lemon taste then you can add more after). Blend for 5-10 seconds
  3. Et Voila! You have a delicious summer drink

Recipe makes: approximately 16oz (2 cups)

Please note that you should not drink essential oils out of plastic as the oils may break down the compounds in plastic. This is why I transferred my berry lemonade slush from the NutriBullet container into a glass for drinking. Check out this post for more important essential oil safety tips!

I know I am biased but I LOVE this drink! Although there is some sugar in it (sugar & natural sugars in berries) this drink is nowhere near the same sugar content as sugary drinks you buy from the store.

How Does It Compare?

This comparison is based on 8oz of Berry Lemonade Slush (recipe makes 16oz).

Please note the sugar count for Berry Lemonade Slush includes the sugar added as well at the sugar found in the mixed berries.

As you can see, Berry Lemonade Slush is much healthier choice when compared to store-bought beverages. I hope you enjoy this delicious drink this summer with or without alcohol 😉

  1. I love your posts as I learn something new about essential oils all the time. Thanks for sharing this delicious recipe with us at #AnythingGoes and see you next week.

  2. This drink looks so refreshing and delicious. I have lemon and orange essential oils, but I have never tried mixing them in my drinks. This is a brilliant idea and I would like to try it.

  3. Essential Oils have so many uses and they truly do make a positive difference in a person’s overall well-being. This is the first recipe I’ve seen them used in a drink though, but it looks very yummy. I know I’d enjoy drinking it on our hot summer days.

  4. On my dieting journey, I’ve been a bit negligent about counting sugars in drinks. I’ve stopped drinking Pepsi, but I have sugar in my coffee and a cup of orange juice a day. I think I’m in a bit of a pinch in finding quality essential oils here. Two of my favorite summer drinks are water and strawberry/mango icy (homemade) with honey.

  5. I’ve seen many recipes involving essential oils, and I’m always nervous about trying them. But this does look like a lovely drink. I love berry lemonades. I think my favorites are blackberry and strawberry lemonade.

  6. I make this all the time but never with the oils. I love my smoothie as I call it and I make it with the nutribullet. Now I do put more sugar in there…….I know I know I gotta stop lol

  7. Essential oils deliver many health and beauty benefits. I have a bottle of lemon essential oil, but I never tried adding it in smoothies. The slush you made looks very refreshing and yummy. I can’t wait to make it for my family.

  8. Omg I just made this exact concoction for a drink this weekend too. I skipped the sugar and essential oils and made mine with: strawberries, watermelon, blueberries (all frozen) and then a bunch of water, and a splash of vanilla extract. It was really delicious and looked all nice and pretty (it came out dark purple). I’m totally going to keep making it. But I really need a better blender. It took forever and I think the blender got overheated lol 🙁

  9. Wow I’ve never heard of putting essential oils in a drink before, what a good idea! It looks yum. My fave summer drink it fresh-made piña coladas (with or without alcohol), they are just so tasty, but yes, they have loads of sugar in them 🙁

  10. I love that you used essential oils! I actually really love my grapefruit oil and it is so good! I love adding a splash to water and it’s so delicious. I will have to try your version of a slush. What a cool and refreshing treat on a hot summer day.

  11. The color on this drink is amazing. THis is like the perfect summer drink. I need one right now so I can go sit on my balcony and fill my etsy orders. Looks so refreshing and yum. Who doesnt love Berry lemonade? haha

  12. I have never heard of this idea before. The problem is that we have not noticed essential oils in the grocery or any near store locally. If we want to stay away from sugary drinks, there’s also the natural sugar called stevia. Some families are also planting this as a sugar substitute.

  13. This drink looks so healthy and delicious. I can’t wait to make your yummy recipe and enjoy it with friends and family. Thanks for sharing your Berry Lemonade Slush with Essential Oils with us on the Healthy Happy Green and Natural Party Blog Hop. I’m pinning and sharing.

I would love to hear from you... leave me your thoughts!
