DIY Upcycled Glass Spray Bottles

Want to make an essential oil spray but can't because you don't have a bottle? Learn how to easily make your own DIY upcycled glass spray bottles! If you love making all-natural DIY home and beauty products with essential oils then chances are you have come across many posts which need a glass spray bottle!

This may not be true for everyone everywhere but in my city of around 50,000 people, there is not a single place to buy glass spray bottles. If I can’t find them where I live, I can only imagine how hard it must be for people in smaller towns!

Since I can’t get bottles where I live I either buy them on Amazon prime (and get free 2 day delivery) or I buy them when I am out of town. The last time I ordered I made a larger purchase so I am lucky to have a few extras on hand at the moment but there have been many times in the past when I needed a bottle but didn’t have one.

DIY Upcycled Glass Spray Bottle for Essential Oils

I decided that there had to be an easier way to get a glass spray bottle in a pinch so I got creative and found some bottles that you may have or should be able to buy at any grocery store to make your own spray bottle!

Of course you will still need the spray bottle tops. I used these tops in my post however you could also use tops from plastic bottles you have in your home our by a plastic bottle at the dollar store and use the top from that.

Why Use Glass Bottles?

Essential oils are very powerful and can actually break down plastic. That said, there are some plastic bottles that are stronger and ok to use with essential oil recipes. The most common bottle you will find is plastic #1 PETE. If you look around your home you can probably find a few. I know my witch hazel bottle, vegetable glycerin bottle and the tatar rinse bottle for the dog are all PETE bottles. Dr. Hill also states that in addition to #1 PETE you can also use plastic #2 and HDPE plastic. Learn more here!

I try to always use glass bottles but would make exceptions for bath & body recipes used in the shower or small batches of spray recipes that I will use in a relatively short amount of time. So if you don’t have any of the glass bottles I suggest below, then hunt around the house for a plastic bottle with PETE on the bottom, I’m sure you can find one or two!

I did some searching and here are some bottles that work with the spray bottle top I have (seems to be a standard size).

  • Perrier Glass Water Bottle
  • VH Soy Sauce Bottle
  • Apple Cider Vinegar Bottle
  • Glass drink bottle (can also use Perrier bottle)

Putting it together

  1. Remove the label
  2. Soak & wash the bottle in warm water and soap.
  3. Use lemon essential oil to remove any sticky residue on the bottle
  4. Make your spray (recipes below)
  5. Apply your own label – See my labels here
  6. Screw the spray top onto your bottle & you are ready to go! (Canadians get them here)
