Practical Essential Oil Storage Solutions for Home & Travel
Essential Oil Storage Tips
Keep out of Direct Sunlight
Essential oils come in dark bottles to help reduce the UV light that reaches the oils. Whenever possible you want to keep your oils in the dark bottles. All of my oils are in the original bottles or in recycled bottles (find creative uses for your empty eo bottles here) with the exception of my roller bottles. Keeping your essential oils in a storage box can also help in reducing light exposure.
Storing Clear Bottles
While you can buy roller bottles in amber or blue glass, the majority are made with clear glass. This is not a big deal as long as they aren’t exposed to light for long periods of time. For example mine are often found in my purse, in my storage box, beside my bed etc. You wouldn’t want them on a shelf that is exposed to direct sunlight.
Store Oils in a Cool Dry Place
This goes along with keeping oils out of sunlight. Also I wouldn’t recommend your keep oils exposed in your car or other places where the heat is not controlled. If you do want to have oils in your car to put in your car diffuser then I would recommend you keep them in a case in your purse.
Keep Out of Reach
As we know, essential oils are very potent so it is essential that you children and animals aren’t able to get into your oils.
How I Store my Essential Oils
Essential Oil Storage at Home
At home some of my oils are quite organized while others have their own special little home like the collection near my bed or the ones that hang out by my diffuser.
Essential Oil Storage Box
When it comes to storage boxes I have 2 different styles:
This is my tiered storage box. The one I have was purchased from doTERRA but you can also get a similar model from amazon like this one. Here is a picture of mine, I really like that I have a place to keep my roller bottles organized!
Essential Oil Shelf
I received this shelf which is technically meant to hold nail polish bottles for Christmas a few years ago. You can either screw it into the wall or have it standing on a desk/counter which is what I do. I have had mine standing up against the wall on the counter for well over a year and haven’t had any problems with it being unsteady or tipping. I keep the oils that I use regularly on this shelf so I can easily find them. Plus it adds a nice pop of colour to the room!
You can see a very similar (if not the exact same) shelf here!
Canadian friends, see one that’s very similar to mine and available to you here!
Storing Essential Oils for Travel
When we go visit family I always take my essential oils with me! My must haves that I always take are Passion from doTERRA, Digestzen, eucalyptus (for clear breathing), cedarwood (to help me sleep), lavender & tea tree (for skin irritations) and a few others that I can’t think of off the top of my head.
My favourite way to pack my oils is in my toiletry bag from Thirty-One Gifts. I put my essential oils in the clear zippered pouch at the bottom (I have stuffed that section full of oils before meaning some tip but I have never had a spill, just make sure lids are on tight). Behind the clear punch at the bottom is an elastic mesh section where I stand up my roller bottles. The top clear zippered section is usually where I keep my carrier oils and empty roller bottles as I am always making new roller bottle recipes when I visit friends and family!
At this time Thirty-One is only available in Canada and is able to ship nation wide with the exception of the Territories & Quebec.
Canadians you can shop for your toiletry bag and other great bags here!
If you are in the US you can see similar bags here.
