The Best Essential Oils for Your Skin

My top 5 essential oils for skin care and the ways that I use them. www.paintedteacup.comOn top of the many uses for essential oils, did you know you can also use them for skin care?!

How do you manage different skin irritations, rashes, and blemishes? I do not, by any means have an overly involved skin care/makeup routine. I never have and most likely never will… it’s just not me. However since I have been using essential oils, I have realized more and more ways in which essential oils can be used to deal with skin care.

Although I do not exactly have ‘problem’ skin, there are still so many ways that I use essential oils for skin care! There are tons of ways that essential oils can be used on skin, here are some specific skin issues that I manage using essential oils.

5 Essential Oils for Skin Care (that I use):

  • Lavender
  • Frankincense
  • Melaleuca
  • Lemon
  • Peppermint

How I use them:

Bug Bites:

Lavender works wonders for bug bites, specifically mosquito bites! Apply lavender directly to the bite to help reduce that awful itchy feeling and to reduce redness. I have also used lavender to help with the itchy feeling for spider bites. While I haven’t personally tried it, basil essential oil is also recommended for spider bites. Make sure you keep yourself safe this summer, check out essential oils for camping!

Burns:

Lavender is going to help soothe the immediate pain associated with burning your finger. After you can apply Frankincense to help reduce the chances of scarring and to speed up the recovery time.

Scrapes & Cuts:

Melaleuca is great for disinfecting and helping to ‘clean’ the scrape/cut. After you have cleaned the cut, use lavender to help reduce redness and to soothe your discomfort.

Rash/Dry Skin Patches:

Again this is where you want to rely on the amazing Lavender and Melaleuca combo. Combine equal amounts of Lavender and Melaleuca and add some fractionated coconut oil to help cover a large area of skin. Using a roller bottle is a great way to apply this mixture to the affected areas.

Pimples:

Pimples… zits… there is just no pretty way to say it. We all hate when we experience this, especially when they pop up out of nowhere! I apply lemon to these unsightly monsters to help dry them out and make them shrink. Important: lemon is a photosensitive oil, this means that if it is directly exposed to sunlight, it could actually burn your skin. Make sure you avoid direct sunlight for 12 hours after applying the oil. To prevent this, I put on lemon directly on my zits before bed. Here are some other awesome ways to use lemon essential oil this summer!

Blemishes:

I don’t know about you but sometimes I will just have random red marks/patches on my face. They aren’t dry… just… red. I put a dab of Frankincense on these spots and it seems to help!

Scars:

I have heard that Frankincense works very well to help reduce the appearance of scars. About 7 years ago I had a mole removed from my face and now have a small white-ish patch from the ‘new skin’. I am excited to try Frankincense on it soon to see if it reduces the colouring… stay tuned!

Cooling:

Do you often feel hot? Combine 2 oz of water with 8-10 drops of peppermint. Spritz this on your skin and enjoy the refreshing and cooling sensation. Note: do not do this before bed, peppermint helps with energy and you may end up being awake all night. Check out these other great summer uses for peppermint!

  1. I’m curious about the frankincense for scars. I also had a mole removed from my knee and it didn’t heal right and left a really ugly looking scar. I don’t know that anything will make it go away, but something to help would be nice!

  2. I just did a post on pepermint for your skin to cool you down for the summer so I know the benefits of that. Lemon has so many attributes to it I gotta keep more on tap. Love this post because we want our skins to look great and the natural the better.

  3. I love, love, love essential oils. I can’t do without Frankincense. I had NO idea about the lemon oil!!!!!!!!!!!! I am so excited to give that a try and see if it works (well not excited but you know what I mean 🙂 Thanks for this great list of essential oils you can use for your skin.

  4. I love using essential oils. They are natural and gentle on the skin. I use tea tree oil for acne and fungal infection, rosehip oil for my little girl’s eczema and Argan oil for my hair.

  5. I’ve slowly began working oils into my skincare routine. While in Korea, I learned that cleansing oils work to help draw out impurities. Since using these cleansers, I have noticed more clarity in my skin. Also, I have been looking for natural ways to reduce the appearance of scars. I have a few due to eczema and will look into Frankincense as you suggested.

  6. I love using essential oils for health and beauty needs! Great idea to put the lemon on your skin before bed to cut out the worry of being in the sun. I’ve shied away from using it for that reason. I also love your tip about frankincense for red patches on the skin. I’ll have to try that out!

  7. I’ve been looking more into essential oils and this makes me even more curious – especially if they can help with scars. I need to give them a try and incorporate them into my skin care routine!

  8. Oh, how I dislike mosquitos! They bite me every time I am outdoors it seems. I even wear jeans in the heat to avoid the bites that end up being sores because I dig at them. I can’t wait to try the lavender!

  9. I seriously feel like I was brought to the post for a reason. I need to try some of these. Pregnancy is not doing my skin any favors.. Dry skin, acne, PLUS I have bug bites.. Uhg! Mosquito season in Florida >:(

  10. I’ve been battling mosquito bites right now. I had not heard about lavender helping with that. I’m going to get my lavender out today and get some relief.

  11. I need to put together an essential oils first aid kit. It’s so much nicer to be able to use oils like these for bug bits and pimples, rather than the chemicals that many people use. This list covers almost all of our summer skin issues, thank you!

  12. This is such an awesome list! I have been using tea tree oil to heal some of my piercings but had never really thought to turn to other essential oils for things like scars/mosquito bites. I think I’ve got some supply shopping to do!!

  13. I honestly never knew that you could use essential oils for your face, I wonder how this would work on oily skin because I have very oily skin these days. My favorite scent is lavender, I actually buy that for candles around the house.

  14. It feels like I really need to do more research. I am excited by all of the possibilities that I see for essential oils, I am just don’t know if I know enough to start incorporating them. What’s a good way to test the waters?

  15. I love learning about all the wonderful uses of essential oils. It’s truly amazing the many things you can cure naturally if you know how to use oils effectively. My kids are out late in the summer and the bugs are terrible so I will definitely keep the lavendar oils for bug bits in mind.

  16. I only use natural moisturizing carrier oils and essential oils. Right now I am loving Lavender, Tea Tree and Rose hips oils! Thanks for sharing The Best Essential Oils for Your Skin with us on the Healthy Happy Green and Natural Party Blog Hop. I’m pinning and sharing.
