Wow the cooler temperatures are definitely here! It seems that as the weather gets cooler, the nasty germs come out in full force! One thing that many people seem to need help with in the cool months is respiratory support!
Never fear, I have an all-natural vapor rub recipe to share with you! My wonderful sister-in-law Krista who blogs at My Naturally Crazy Life shared this recipe with me. She is like the queen of essential oil DIY and has agreed to allow me to share this awesome recipe with all of you! You may also want to check out her DIY Soothing Essential Oil Cough Drops.
My husband was very grateful when Krista gave him some of this rub to use this week while he has been feeling under the weather!
Natural Essential Oil Vapor Rub
What You Need:
- 1/2 cup of coconut oil
- 1-2 TBSP* of beeswax
- 25 – 30 drops of the essential oil respiratory blend**
- 10 of eucalyptus essential oil
*The consistency of the rub depends on the amount of beeswax used. 2 TBSP of beeswax will give you a consistency slightly more solid than vaseline.
**Don’t have the respiratory blend? Use these oils instead: 12 drops peppermint, 10 drops lemon and 3-5 drops of thyme. Make sure you still use the 10 drops of eucalyptus too.
Directions:
- Heat the coconut oil and wax in the microwave for 20 second intervals until it’s all melted together
- Add in your essential oils
- Stir
- Let your mixture sit and cool
Once it becomes solid, you are ready to use it!
How to Apply the Essential Oil Vapor Rub
You can apply the rub to your chest, back, feet, and under your nose. Start with a small amount on your finger and then add more if needed. When applying on children try putting it on their feet and cover it up with socks to ensure they don’t accidentally get some in their eyes. Check out more essential oil safety tips.
Now you are ready to battle whatever those nasty germs throw your way this fall and winter!
Now that you have the recipe, where do you plan to store it? On a scrap of paper? Pinterest? Written on whatever was near you at the time? I was always finding great essential oil recipes but didn’t have a place to store them! This resulted in scraps of paper that often got lost or pinterest pins that got buried on my boards. So I decided to solve this problem by creating my Essential Oil Toolkit & Recipe Journal! Take a sneak peak at the video below and if you like what you see, purchase your copy as a paperback book or PDF printable HERE!
Great idea especially for those going into winter. I am always amazed at what essential oils can do and am learning about them through your posts. Thanks for linking up with us at #AnythingGoes.
We don’t do essential oils in our house, but I love that you made your own VIcks Vaporub! What a neat idea. We use it all the time.
I love this! We use it a lot in the winter so it would be good that we could make it ourselves. I need to get those oils, but when I do I will try this.
This is fantastic thank you – I definitely need to make myself some ready for the cold months. x
I could have used this last week when I was sick! I really wanted a rub to sooth my chest! I’m going to make up a batch so that next time I’m sick I’m prepareD! Thanks for the great recipe!
That is so great! You really can use essential oils for everything, it seems.
I could use some of this right now. I’m not sure if I picked up a cold or just sinus problems but this would help!
I have really gotten into essential oils lately and this will be a great recipe for winter weather!! Thanks!!
great post. i love all natural and non toxic products. This is a great DIY recipe for the whole family
I have never thought of making my own vapor rub. I will try this.
I have to give this a try. I’m looking for a great alternative to Vicks vaporub, something natural.
I needed this stuff a week ago. I ended up with a sinus infection then it moved to my chest. I could tell I was getting bronchitis. I get it at least once a year thanks to my allergies.
I never would of thought to make my own vapor rub! If I’m ever feeling under the weather this winter I will give this a try 🙂
With winter coming up this will be a great thing to do! Thanks so much for sharing.
I love using essential oils. I will have to tr this recipe. I have a cold right now so this is great timing.
I can’t wait to make this! We are already passing colds around our house. I think I even have all of these things on hand!
Yes, I don’t have a respiratory blend. Nice that you have other options as substitutes. 🙂 I believe vapor rubs are a must especially for this season. My daughter has cough and colds now and I know vapor rubs helps. I’m congested at times too so it’s good to have a homemade thing, at least I know the ingredients are safe. 🙂
I am in love with the benefits of essential oils and I love creating things for my family using them. I have to make this for winter!! I know we will need it.
I’m so making this soon! In the South, we put vapor rub on the bottoms of babies’ feet, then put socks on, to help them sleep better at night. I’m so happy to know I can make my own now!
