I don’t know about you but I absolutely LOVE body butter! However there is a problem PRICE!! I have bought jars between $20-30 before which to me is just crazy! Today’s post will share a diy essential oil body butter which gives you the wonderful moisturizing effects of store-bought butter but for a fraction of the price!
If you have read my posts before then you know I am all about super simple diy projects like my essential oil sugar scrub, essential oil bath bombs and essential oil play dough! Today’s isn’t quite so easy… it involves a stove and takes about 15-20 minutes to make but I promise it is wonderful! Also if I can make it then anyone can… I burn grilled cheese for goodness sake!

Before we get to the recipe I would just like to make a note that this body butter is extremely oily once applied. I would wait 1o-15 minutes to get dressed after applying the essential oil body butter! With this less is definitely more!
DIY Moisturizing Essential Oil Body Butter
What You Need:
1 cup of Shea Butter
½ cup of Coconut Oil
½ cup of Olive Oil
35-40 drops of Essential Oil (I used equal parts of lemon and lime)
A glass container for storage
How to Make It:
1) Melt the shea butter, coconut oil and olive oil together in a pot on the stove top. Set to low/medium heat (I had it at 4 on my stove).
2) Once the ingredients have melted to a liquid, remove from heat and allow to cool until partly set. I transferred the liquid into a bowl and put it in the freezer for 20 minutes. Note: I left mine in for like 40 minutes as time got away from me. I was worried as it was quite hard on the top however once I ran my spoon along the outside I realized it was just the top layer that was hard. I just broke it up and started mixing from there.
3) Add the essential oils to the bowl
4) Use a hand mixer and whip the ingredients for about 3 minutes until the body butter comes close to the consistency of butter cream frosting.
5 Place in a glass jar and use as you wish!
Note: This body butter takes a while to absorb into your skin and you definitely do not want to apply it before putting your clothes on as I would imagine the oil could stain your clothes.
Now that you have the recipe, where do you plan to store it? On a scrap of paper? Pinterest? Written on whatever was near you at the time? I was always finding great essential oil recipes but didn’t have a place to store them! This resulted in scraps of paper that often got lost or pinterest pins that got buried on my boards. So I decided to solve this problem by creating my Essential Oil Toolkit & Recipe Journal! Take a sneak peak at the video below and if you like what you see, purchase your copy as a paperback book or PDF printable HERE!
There you have it, somewhat easy diy essential oil body butter!
What scent will you use to make your essential oil body butter?
I bet it smells heavenly! I can tell by the photos that it’s rich and creamy. I’ll have to try this one for sure.
I would use a fruit scent, I love a mango, lemon citrus type of scent.
This is such a great beauty DIY. My skin really gets destroyed each and every winter, and my hands are always so dry since I am constantly washing them. Will most definitely try out your recipe.
Oh this sounds absolutely luxurious!! I’m definitely going to be making a batch for myself. I have sensitive skin so most store bought lotions don’t work for me.
Anything with shea butter is great for my dry skin, especially in the winter months. Sounds like a great recipe!
I make homemade body butter all the time using essential oils. One of my favorites is peppermint and eucalyptus, because it doubles to help my sinuses.
I have never tried body butter. Looks like something I could use because my skin is always so dry.
I love making my own products like these. I don’t use EO’s enough, but I’d love to whip up a batch of this. I bet it smells amazing.
This sounds great. I could probably benefit from this level of skincare. It’s nice that this is so easy to make.
I’d love to try this recipe for a moisturizing body butter. I love making my own beauty products, so this is one I’d love to make! This moisturizing body butter will help my dry skin!
This body butter looks amazing. I have a friend that makes body butter so I buy from her to support plus it is so good.
This is such a fantastic DIY idea, I will have to try to make it. I love seeing what others are doing with essential oils, very creative idea!
Thanks for sharing your knowledge, Chantal! I want to try this one. I love anything about essential oils.
I love the photo of your light and fluffy homemade whipped body butter! I can almost smell its glorious scent. I’ve never experimented with making body butter at home before, but you’ve just lit the candle of inspiration! Thank you so much for sharing your recipe.
This sounds like the perfect thing for Summer! Love the combination of lemon and lime. Can’t wait to try this!
Oh wow I need to try this – one thing I really want to do more of this year is make DIY body products. x
I definitely need to play around with essential oils. However, I make my body butters but I don’t heat them. I just whip them in their natural state. Good stuff.
Sounds very good but I wouldn’t use lemon and lime for areas that could be exposed to sunlight within 24 hours – it can cause pigmentation patches. I’m living proof because I forgot about not going out in the sun and put a blend containing several citrus oils and now have large freckles on my chest!
This sounds absolutely wonderful! I have most of the ingredients already so I will definitely be making this soon.
This looks amazing! So much better to make it yourself than to pay for the expensive ones with all the filler ingredients in them. 🙂
