Citronella essential oil is highly versatile and has a beautiful scent.
Slightly sweet, floral but lemon-like, Citronella is pleasing to the senses and it is long-lasting which is super nice.
Citronella is diverse, multi-purpose and it’s one of those oils that I recommend having on hand. You get a lot out of this little bottle.
Here are my favorite ways to use Citronella essential oil:
Citronella is uplifting and energizing. When diffused into the air it lifts the negative vibe of sadness, anxiety and stress. A go-to essential oil for when you want to “lighten the mood”.
2) Roller Bottle:
The benefits of citronella reach far and wide but I find it especially helpful on-the-go for promoting a positive outlook, boosting mood, and for ouch care. It’s easy to do, just place 10-20 drops of Citronella essential oil in a 10ml roller bottle and fill the rest with carrier oil of your choice. Mix and apply as needed.
3) In the Bath:
Citronella is one of my favorite essential oils for bath. It is comforting and soothing for aches and pains and improves mood without making you sleepy. The scent of citronella stays with you after the bath, which I personally love.
4) Make DIY Bath Salts
- 1 cup Epsom salt
- ¼ cup Sea salt (optional)
- ¼ cup Baking Soda
- 10 drops Essential oil of your choice
*use ¼ to ½ cup per bath
4) Household Cleaner:
Citronella is an anti-fungal, anti-microbial and antiseptic all rolled up in one. With powerful cleansing properties, Citronella is used all around the home for day to day cleaning.
DIY Cleaning Spray All-Purpose
- 1-1/2 cups Distilled Water
- 1 tbsp Liquid Castile Soap (unscented)
- 10 drops Citronella and Tea Tree essential oil
- 16 oz Spray Bottle, shake well
5) Body Spray:
Because Citronella is highly effective against foul odors it makes a great DIY body spray for everyday wear and especially for after the gym. Simply combine 20-30 drops of essential oil with 1 tbsp witch hazel in a 4oz spray bottle, fill bottle with distilled water, shake well and spritz away. I like combining Citronella and Geranium with Lemon or Lime, it smells amazing.
6) Inspect Repellant:
Combine with coconut oil and apply directly to the skin for an effective mosquito repellant. It can be diffused indoors or out for insect control. Citronella is great companion for camping and hiking.
7) Skin Care:
When applied to the skin Citronella can improve imperfections and redness. Citronella can brighten complexion and speed healing time. Add to a moisturizer or carrier oil such as coconut or jojoba oil and apply generously.
